The EDP Brasil project involves an investment of €7.5 million. This renewable hydrogen unit is the first in the Ceará State. Moreover, this is also the first hydrogen project of the EDP Group.

This EDP renewable hydrogen plant is a research and development project of the UTE Pecém. It should generate clean fuel with a guarantee of renewable origin. In addition, it will allow the development of a roadmap with scalability analyses.

A favourable location

The EDP Brasil site also includes a solar power plant with a capacity of 3MW. In addition, the project integrates a state-of-the-art electrolyser module for the production of fuel from renewable sources. Moreover, its production capacity is 250Nm3/h of gas.

The company’s initiative relies on important partnerships such as Hytron, which acts as the project executor. The GESEL group evaluates the production by identifying the economic and market issues. João Marques da Cruz, CEO of EDP Brasil, states:

“We chose the Pecém complex to house our first green hydrogen plant in Brazil, as we recognize that Ceará brings together strategic characteristics to lead the process of introducing green hydrogen in the country, both for its outstanding solar and wind potential – fundamental for gas production – and for its location and excellent infrastructure offering for the flow of this product to the international market.”

With this project, EDP Brasil becomes a pioneer in the generation of knowledge in the field of renewable hydrogen. The project also aims to analyze the gas production chain. In addition, the project is also studying strategic partnerships with industry and adaptations to hydrogen mobility.
