Billion Watts has announced the official launch of its first solar-storage project in Australia, located in the state of Victoria. Scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2026, the site will combine a photovoltaic installation with a battery system designed to optimise performance on the National Electricity Market (NEM). The project has received full approval from local authorities, covering land use, environmental compliance, fire safety, and construction management.

A solar-storage integration model for the Australian market

The system will allow electricity to be stored during low-price periods and dispatched during peak pricing or frequency deviation events. This operational flexibility is intended to maximise asset value through energy arbitrage and grid stability services. The goal is also to establish a replicable model for future similar projects in the region.

The development is being led by an international consortium of specialised firms. Smart Power System will supply the Energy Management System (EMS) for real-time monitoring and operational optimisation. Lixma & Legacy will provide the photovoltaic modules and engineering, procurement, and construction services. Kingstone Energy Technology will act as legal and financial advisor, assisting with regulatory compliance and cross-border financing structuring.

A diversified revenue strategy

The project is expected to participate in wholesale and ancillary service markets, generating returns through multiple revenue streams. Additionally, while not a primary focus, the site is projected to avoid approximately 6,896 tonnes of COâ‚‚ emissions annually.

Billion Watts is currently advancing six additional projects in Victoria and New South Wales. These sub-5MW sites are designed for connection at the distribution level, benefitting from faster approval processes and shorter construction times. This approach enables quicker commissioning, suited to a market marked by high volatility.

A strategy adapted to a shifting market

Since July 2025, spot electricity prices in Australia have fluctuated between –AUD 1,000 and AUD 20,700/MWh, increasing opportunities for standalone storage assets and small-scale solar projects. These conditions reinforce the value of developments that can respond swiftly to market signals.

“This initiative marks the expansion of our expertise from the Taiwanese market to Australia,” said Elaine Chen, Director of Billion Watts Australia Pty Ltd, highlighting the importance of regulatory compliance and engineering in the group’s value proposition.
