UK-based autonomous underwater drone developer Ray Systems Ltd has signed an agreement with Beam Global for the development of custom battery systems to power its next-generation vehicles. The collaboration aims to address specific needs in energy density, extended endurance, and durability in marine environments.
Rising demand for long-endurance solutions
Ray Systems Ltd specialises in designing drones for industrial, military and environmental applications. The company selected Beam Global for its ability to create compact, safety-certified batteries capable of operating under extreme conditions. These batteries will enable Ray Systems’ vehicles to remain submerged for longer periods while maintaining performance.
The agreement was signed in London during a visit by Beam Global’s Chief Executive Officer, Desmond Wheatley, to the United Kingdom and the Middle East. The partnership reflects the growing interest in autonomous marine technologies and the need to integrate custom energy solutions into increasingly advanced underwater platforms.
Intelligent system to optimise performance
The battery systems will incorporate Beam Global’s proprietary intelligent Battery Management System, which allows real-time monitoring of State of Health and State of Charge. This capability is intended to enhance drone reliability, improve manoeuvrability, and extend the duration of autonomous missions. These features are critical in sectors where precision, stealth and endurance are operational priorities.
Ray Systems Ltd Chief Executive Officer James Farha stated that Beam Global’s ability to supply batteries designed to fit within drone architecture was a decisive factor. He added that the systems reduce total operating costs while enhancing mission performance over extended periods.
A rapidly expanding market
The global underwater drone market is valued at $6.6bn in 2025 and is projected to reach $17.3bn by 2034. This growth is driven by increasing demand across defence, marine research, offshore inspection, and environmental monitoring sectors. The integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things is accelerating this trend, though data security and communication challenges remain.
Desmond Wheatley said the partnership creates strong prospects for the development of embedded solutions in hostile environments. He also noted Beam Global’s increasing focus on autonomous robotic platforms, which are seen as strategic growth drivers for the company in the coming years.
