Axpo is stepping up its expansion in this sector.
For the company, this is a key project in the decarbonization of the national mobility sector.
Axpo plans 15 MW capacity
The new hydrogen plant will be located near the Wildegg-Brugg run-of-river hydroelectric power station.
This power station will also supply the newgreen hydrogen plant with electricity.
The new plant will have a capacity of 15 MW and will produce 2,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
The hydrogen produced will be transported to the Voegtlin-Meyer station via a pipeline, and will also be sold to other stations.
The new plant will be able to fuel around 300 buses and trucks a year.
This represents a major step forward in reducingcarbon emissions in the Swiss mobility sector.
Nevertheless, the people of Brugg will decide whether or not to build the plant at a public meeting in December.
In the event of a positive opinion, the company will submit a building permit for commissioning at the end of 2023.
Maintaining its position on the Swiss renewable energy market
With this project, Axpo intends to maintain its position as a leader in renewable energy not only in Switzerland, but also in Europe.
The Swiss company is also looking to expand its presence in the hydrogen sector, with projects in the pipeline in other countries.
To this end, its Italian subsidiary has joined forces with ABB on a pilot project in Italy.
The aim is to build a robust network in the hydrogen supply chain in a variety of industrial sectors.
The company has also invested 25% in Swiss Green Gas International, a specialist in “Power-to-X” installations.
With these projects and its renewable portfolio, Axpo aims to become a major player in the decarbonization of Switzerland.
Indeed, the country hopes to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with European Union targets.
