Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL), in collaboration with Adani Group and TotalEnergies, recently announced the launch of a bold pilot project at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) in the United Arab Emirates. This project aims to integrate green hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas for residential and commercial consumers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Green hydrogen, produced by electrolysis of water using renewable electricity, offers a less carbon-intensive alternative with heating capacities equivalent to those of gas.

Technologies and Objectives

ATGL plans to use state-of-the-art technologies to blend green hydrogen with natural gas. Scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of fiscal 2024-2025, the project will start with a blend containing up to 8% green hydrogen, depending on regulatory approvals. Following the success of this pilot project, ATGL plans to extend the use of the hydrogen mixture to other parts of the city and to areas licensed to AGTL.

Emissions Reduction and Environmental Impact

According to studies, a mixture containing up to 8% hydrogen can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 4%. This project therefore represents a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint. In addition, it aligns with ATGL’s commitment to environmental sustainability and India’s energy independence by 2047.

Collaboration and Ecosystem Development

ATGL plans to collaborate with various stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, to share its learnings and develop an ecosystem around hydrogen blending in city gas distribution in India. The partnership also aims to acquire and share knowledge on operational aspects and the compatibility of blended fuel with existing infrastructure.

Perspectives from Mr Suresh P Manglani

Suresh P Manglani, Executive Director and CEO of Adani Total Gas Ltd, underlined the company’s commitment to building a sustainable operation.

“This project represents our continued dedication to building the national infrastructure for India’s energy independence by 2047. By investing in such innovative projects, we are actively contributing to the evolution of the industry and the advancement of sustainable energy solutions.”

he declared.

ATGL’s green hydrogen blending pilot project marks a significant step forward in the field of sustainable energy. By reducing carbon emissions and exploring new paths to energy independence, ATGL is demonstrating its commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.
