Amazon announces the launch of 71 new renewable energy projects around the world, including in Brazil, India and Poland.

A major private investor

Amazon announces it is expanding its global renewable energy portfolio with an additional 2.7 GW of clean energy capacity. For example, the U.S. company says it is working on 71 new renewable energy projects. The company will develop its first solar farm in Brazil and its first solar farms in India and Poland.

Once fully operational, Amazon’s global renewable energy portfolio will generate 50,000 GWh of clean energy. The company will generate enough energy to power 4.6 million U.S. homes each year. In addition, the company has a total of 379 renewable energy projects in 21 countries.

The company has 154 wind and solar farms. Amazon also has 225 rooftop solar projects, representing 18.5 GW of renewable energy capacity. By the end of 2021, the company will have achieved 85% renewable energy across its operations.

International development

In the Asia Pacific region, Amazon is inaugurating the company’s first three large-scale projects in India. These three projects are solar projects in Rajasthan, representing 420 MW of clean energy capacity. In the Asia-Pacific region, the company now has a total of 57 renewable energy projects.

In Europe, Amazon now has 117 renewable energy projects. The company announces its first rooftop solar projects in France and Austria, and its first solar farm in Poland. In addition, the investment in Poland is one of the largest corporate solar projects announced to date in the country.

In North and South America, Amazon will provide 1 GW of solar power in Louisiana and 122 MW in Brazil, respectively. The company now has a total of 202 projects in North America. In South America, the project includes a $380,000 investment in environmental programs during construction.

Amazon takes action for the environment

Amazon is also working with the Clean Energy Buyers Institute’s Beyond the Megawatt initiative. The goal is to ensure that the industry maximizes the economic, environmental and social impact of energy supply. Miranda Ballentine, CEO of the Clean Buyers Association (CEBA) and the Clean Energy Buyers Institute, states:

“As a key leader in the CEBA community, Amazon continues to demonstrate that when it commits to a vision, it impels a pace and scale that sets a benchmark to follow.”

In 2019, Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge and committed to achieving net zero carbon by 2040. The Pledge now has over 375 signatories. Best Buy, IBM, PepsiCo, Siemens, Unilever, Verizon and Visa are among the signatories.

Amazon is also placing an order for 100,000 electric delivery vehicles. This is the largest order ever placed for electric delivery vehicles. In addition, the company is also investing $2 billion in the development of decarbonization services and solutions.
