ABB, a leader in digital and electrical technologies, is collaborating with Lhyfe, a global pioneer in renewable hydrogen production, and Skyborn, a global leader in renewable energy, to jointly implement and optimize one of Europe’s most ambitious renewable hydrogen projects, SoutH2Port.

The project will be located near Skyborn’s 1 GW Storgrundet offshore wind farm in Söderhamn, Sweden, where Skyborn and Lhyfe recently entered into a purchase and sale agreement with Stora Enso for an industrial property of approximately 40 hectares.

240 tons of hydrogen per day

Once fully operational, SoutH2Port is expected to produce approximately 240 tons of hydrogen per day, with an installed capacity of 600 MW, making it one of the largest suppliers of renewable hydrogen in Europe.

As part of the MOU signed between the companies, ABB will apply critical expertise to optimize the integration of hydrogen and electricity production across the entire ecosystem, including automation, electrical and digital technologies and drive the development of commercially scalable energy transition projects in the region.

The goal is to explore opportunities to link Power-to-X conversion technologies, which transform renewable electricity into carbon-neutral energy carriers, such as hydrogen, and store the energy for later use.

The project will benefit an entire region

The new plant will support the decarbonization of the Swedish energy system, either directly through the supply of hydrogen or through the subsequent downstream production of refined fuels such as methanol, sustainable aviation fuel or ammonia, contributing to the Swedish government’s plans to become the first fossil fuel-free welfare country by 2045.

SoutH2Port will also contribute to strengthening the attractiveness and competitiveness of the region and local society by creating new jobs and business opportunities.
