TÜV Rheinland, the world’s leading independent technical services company, has granted its first pre-certification in India to Avaada Group for the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia in Gopalpur, Odisha. The project, with a production capacity of 0.5 MMTPA of green ammonia, is designed to meet the needs of domestic and international markets. The company had also raised $1.07 billion to finance its hydrogen and green ammonia projects in India.

Assessment and compliance

The Avaada project was assessed for compliance with the criteria for product design, production, storage and transport. TÜV Rheinland’s pre-certification for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) under the European Union’s RED II directive confirms production in line with international standards. This certification attests that the hydrogen and ammonia produced by Avaada have lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels, in line with European requirements.

Market impact and outlook

Vineet Mittal, Chairman of the Avaada Group, emphasized that this certification represents a validation of the company’s ability to comply with strict international standards. As the first Indian company to obtain this certification, Avaada sets a new benchmark for the sector. This recognition strengthens Avaada’s position on the international market, opening up new business opportunities and strategic partnerships. Benedikt Anselmann, Regional Executive Vice President of TÜV Rheinland, said that this pre-certification underlines the role of green hydrogen in the global energy transition. Ravi Kumar, Vice President Industrial Services at TÜV Rheinland India, added that this certification demonstrates Avaada’s commitment to EU-compliant production. This commitment is crucial to attracting investors and customers who are sensitive to sustainability and environmental standards.

Standards and certifications

The TÜV Rheinland H2.21 RED II standard for hydrogen covers the green, blue, turquoise and carbon-neutral categories, enabling customers to verify several climate aspects with a single certification. This approach facilitates the validation of RED II-compliant projects, offering greater transparency and credibility for market players. Avaada’s pre-design certification by TÜV Rheinland sets a new standard in green hydrogen and ammonia production, strengthening Avaada’s position in the global energy market.
