GAIL (India) Limited inaugurates its first green hydrogen production plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh. The plant uses a 10MW PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyzer to produce 4.3 tonnes per day (TPD) of hydrogen from water electrolysis, using renewable electricity. The hydrogen produced is 99.999% pure and is generated at a pressure of 30 kg/cm². This initiative is part of the NationalGreen HydrogenMission, aimed at promoting the use of renewable energy sources and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Pankaj Jain, inaugurated the plant at an event attended by GAIL Chairman and Managing Director Shri Sandeep Gupta and other senior officials.

Using and distributing green hydrogen

The hydrogen produced in Vijaipur will initially be used as a fuel with natural gas to power various equipment and processes at GAIL‘s existing plant. This hybrid approach aims to maximize energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. In addition, GAIL plans to distribute this hydrogen to retail customers in neighboring regions, transporting it via high-pressure waterfalls. To guarantee a constant source of green electricity, GAIL is also developing solar projects with a total capacity of 20MW in Vijaipur, including ground-mounted and floating solar installations. This infrastructure will supply the energy needed to operate the 10MW electrolyzer, ensuring the sustainability of green hydrogen production.

Economic and environmental impact

The establishment of this green hydrogen plant has significant implications for the local and national economy. It creates jobs in the region and stimulates the adoption of green technologies. What’s more, by integrating green hydrogen into its operations, GAIL is reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to India’s climate objectives. Shri Sandeep Gupta, President and CEO of GAIL, emphasized the importance of this achievement: “This green hydrogen plant is a major milestone in our commitment to renewable energy and sustainability. We are proud to support the National Green Hydrogen Mission and contribute to a cleaner energy future.”

Prospects for green hydrogen in India

GAIL’s initiative in Vijaipur is part of a wider context of energy transition in India. What’s more, large-scale green hydrogen production could also open up new export opportunities, positioning India as a key supplier to the global clean energy market. The inauguration of GAIL’s first green hydrogen plant in Vijaipur marks a milestone in India’s energy transition. By combining technological innovation, sustainable development and a commitment to climate objectives, this project illustrates the transformative potential of green hydrogen.
