Hydrom, orchestrated by the Sultanate of Oman, has signed two ambitious new green hydrogen projects in the Dhofar region, totaling an investment of $11 billion. These projects follow the successful closing of Hydrom’s second auction round, increasing the Sultanate’s hydrogen production to 1.38 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) by 2030. The first agreement, drawn up with a consortium including Electricité de France S.A. and its subsidiary EDF Renewables, as well as J-POWER and YamnaCo Ltd, focuses on the production of around 178,000 tpa of green hydrogen using a combined 4.5 GW of wind and solar power capacity in this state also known for its high concentration of renewable energies.large oil reserves.

Advanced technologies and infrastructures

The second agreement with Actis and Fortescue, leaders in sustainable infrastructure and integrated green energy, envisages the construction of up to 4.5 GW of renewable resources. These facilities will power electrolyzers capable of producing up to 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. The hydrogen produced will then be converted into green ammonia at a new facility planned for the Salalah Free Zone, with a projected capacity of 1 mtpa of green ammonia, echoing thejoint development agreement signed between Air Products, OQ, and ACWA Power in 2022.

Strategy and long-term vision

Chaired by Engineer Salim Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of Hydrom, the Sultanate is highlighting its ideal geostrategic position between Europe and Asia and its investor-friendly policies to attract green hydrogen projects. This strategic direction, aligned with global decarbonization objectives, positions Oman as a future leader in low-carbon hydrogen exports.

With these new projects, Oman confirms its commitment to a sustainable energy strategy, reinforcing its role in the global energy transition and establishing itself as a key player in the green hydrogen economy.
