Uniper has initiated the construction phase of two solar projects in the Midlands, specifically in Tamworth and Totmonslow, Staffordshire. Once operational, these two solar farms will be capable of supplying renewable electricity to approximately 23,300 households per year. The Tamworth project, located in Alvecote, will generate 44.20 MWp, while the Totmonslow site, in Draycott in the Moors, will produce 21.33 MWp. These developments will contribute to the United Kingdom’s net-zero targets.

Project progress and regulatory framework

Both projects received the necessary approvals from local authorities in 2023. The Tamworth project also secured a Contract for Difference (CfD) in the AR6 auction in August 2024, ensuring a fixed tariff for the electricity produced. The first power injection into the national grid is expected in 2026. Construction is being carried out by Sunotec UK Ltd for Tamworth and Sustainable Bright for Totmonslow, both specialised in solar engineering and project management.

A strategic investment for Uniper

These solar investments align with Uniper’s broader strategy to invest approximately €8 billion in growth and transformation projects by the early 2030s. These initiatives form part of the company’s expanding portfolio of solar and onshore wind projects across Europe, supporting the transition towards a net-zero energy future.

Uniper’s expanding solar portfolio

Beyond these UK projects, Uniper is also developing several solar farms in Germany and Hungary. The company aims to develop up to 10 gigawatts of ready-to-build capacity by 2030. Additionally, Uniper is exploring opportunities to develop renewable projects around its existing power stations in the UK, potentially integrating solar energy with battery storage solutions to optimise electricity management.
