U.S. producer Sawgrass LNG & Power this month celebrated eight consecutive years of liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Since its first shipment in December 2017, the company has completed several thousand deliveries to industrial customers and power generation facilities across multiple islands in the archipelago.
A unique operator on the U.S.–Bahamas route
Exports are handled by American LNG Marketing LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sawgrass. It remains the only company to have ever delivered LNG from the United States to The Bahamas. This exclusive role began with a breakthrough in 2016, when the company became the first LNG exporter from the continental U.S. to a non–Free Trade Agreement country, starting with shipments to Barbados.
Expansion of bilateral energy cooperation
According to data shared by the company, this cooperation has enabled local operators to move away from liquid fuels, while addressing the logistical challenges of a complex island environment. Regular deliveries have supported electricity generation and industrial usage, in a region where energy stability is a major concern.
Daniel McLaughlin, President and Chief Commercial Officer of Sawgrass LNG & Power, stated that the long-term relationship highlights the strategic importance of U.S. natural gas for Caribbean island economies. He also acknowledged progress made by Bahamian authorities in developing LNG-powered infrastructure, which is expected to reshape the national energy mix in the coming years.
A model of operational continuity in the Caribbean
The company expressed its intention to continue investing in modern energy infrastructure throughout the region. Sawgrass LNG & Power believes that demand for U.S.-produced natural gas is expected to grow over the medium term, supported by power generation upgrades across several Caribbean nations.
“We are ready to support future developments in The Bahamas, as the government plans to expand LNG use in electricity production,” Daniel McLaughlin said.
