Philippines Announces First Natural Gas Discovery in Over Ten Years
President Ferdinand Marcos revealed the discovery of 2.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas at the offshore Malampaya site. This first discovery in over a decade comes amid tensions in the South China Sea.

The Philippines has identified a new natural gas deposit five kilometers east of the Malampaya field, near the Palawan archipelago. According to Philippine authorities, approximately 98 billion cubic feet (2.8 billion cubic meters) of natural gas have been located at this offshore site. According to the presidential statement, these reserves would be sufficient to supply 5.7 million households with electricity for one year.
