FÖS Report: Gas Generation Costs Triple Those of German Renewables
Electricity from natural gas plants would cost between €0.35 and €0.67/kWh including externalities, compared with less than €0.10/kWh for wind and solar, according to a FÖS study.

A 500 MW natural gas plant operated 1,000 hours annually—a realistic assumption for a backup unit—shows a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of €0.192/kWh, of which €0.068/kWh is attributable solely to gas supply. Integration of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) at €100 per ton of CO₂ raises this to €0.23/kWh. Adding externalized costs—those not directly borne by the operator—pushes the total to between €0.35 and €0.67/kWh.
