Rolls-Royce SMR has selected Skanska UK to produce an aseismic bearing pedestal demonstrator for its small modular reactor (SMR). These structural isolation devices are installed beneath the plant’s nuclear island to decouple the reactor building from ground motion during an earthquake. According to the company, they would absorb and dissipate seismic energy, thereby reducing the forces transmitted to the superstructure.
