Canada’s energy sector takes a strategic step forward with the launch of the country’s first commercial green hydrogen and ammonia production plant. McDermott, a major player in the field of engineering and construction, has been selected by Abraxas Power Corporation to lead this innovative project. The Newfoundland facility will combine a 530-turbine wind farm with a 150 MW solar power plant, enabling large-scale production of hydrogen and ammonia.

A strategic energy project

This project represents a significant step forward for Canada’s energy sector. With a planned production capacity of 165,000 metric tons of hydrogen and 5,000 metric tons of ammonia per day, the facility aims to strengthen the country’s energy independence while diversifying its production sources. The combination of wind and solar technologies will optimize energy production, meeting the growing need for clean energy. The project also aims to establish a reference model for future renewable energy projects across the country.

McDermott’s decisive role

McDermott will provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) expertise, as well as planning and cost estimation services for hydrogen production and ammonia treatment. McDermott’s modular, repeatable approach is designed to reduce costs and risks, and guarantee quality. McDermott’s century of experience and ability to manage large-scale projects make it an ideal partner for this project. Teams based in Houston and Gurgaon will work in synergy to bring this initiative to fruition.

Economic and industrial outlook

The Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC) project is designed to have a significant economic impact, creating local jobs and supporting the regional economy. In addition, the production of green hydrogen and ammonia offers a significant export opportunity, strengthening Canada’s position in the international energy market. The project could also act as a catalyst for new initiatives in the renewable energies sector, attracting investment and fostering technological innovation. McDermott and Abraxas Power’s EVREC project represents a strategic step forward for Canada, aimed at diversifying energy sources and strengthening the country’s energy independence.
