Enel, RWE and Iberdrola were the first major players to invest in battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Europe over a decade ago. These large utilities mobilized their corporate balance sheets and internal capabilities—engineering, project construction, electricity market trading and asset management—to develop and operate the first generation of storage projects. According to industry analysts, their investments responded to strategic and technical logic rather than commercial considerations.
