Africa’s five power pools struggle to reach their regional integration potential
The African Energy Chamber analyzes the challenges facing the continent’s five power pools. The Southern African Power Pool, the most advanced, trades only 2% of its total demand despite developed infrastructure.

Regional electricity integration represents a potential lever for addressing Africa’s energy challenges, according to the State of African Energy 2026 Outlook report published by the African Energy Chamber. The organization identifies five regional power pools established across the continent: Southern Africa, Eastern Africa, Western Africa, Central Africa and North Africa. These structures aim to facilitate cross-border electricity trade, share resources and coordinate energy policies.
