LehmanSoft deploys first 2MW grid battery in Saitama Prefecture

LehmanSoft Japan connected a 2MW/8.1MWh energy storage facility to the grid in Chichibu City, marking its entry into the Japanese stationary storage market.

LehmanSoft Japan officially commissioned its first grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on November 1 in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture. The project, with a capacity of 2MW and 8.1MWh, spans a 695m² site and uses battery systems supplied by Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL). The company confirmed the commissioning in a statement released on December 16.

The facility has begun operations in energy arbitrage and is preparing to enter the balancing market. LehmanSoft Japan is not currently registered as a member of the Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX) and has not disclosed its market access provider. It appears to be managing optimisation and dispatch internally.

Internal operating model under development

The company stated that it aims to develop an operational model for the balancing market using data generated from wholesale trading activities. LehmanSoft also plans to expand its project portfolio by partnering with power producers and industrial offtakers, though no details have been disclosed regarding the timing or scope of these partnerships.

LehmanSoft, headquartered in Australia, established its Japanese subsidiary in July 2024 as part of a strategic repositioning. The group has historical activity across sectors including energy and pet products. Its presence in Japan aims to deliver integrated solutions for the development, delivery and operation of storage assets.

Second facility under construction in Fukuoka

In addition to the Saitama project, LehmanSoft is developing a second BESS site with identical capacity in Yame District, Fukuoka Prefecture. The facility is scheduled to be connected to the grid in September 2026. According to the company’s website, both assets are intended for sale after commissioning, with LehmanSoft offering a turnkey development and operations service to investors or local operators.

This deployment marks an initial step for LehmanSoft in the Japanese storage market, which is undergoing structural changes to improve grid flexibility.
