A consortium composed of EDF power solutions, Al Khadra Partners, and OQ Alternative Energy has signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company to develop the Jaalan Bani Bu Ali Independent Wind Power Project with a capacity of 120 megawatts. Located in the Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate, the project spans an area of 10.7 km² and will include 16 turbines, each generating 7.7 MW.
A strategic project for Oman’s national grid
The project is expected to reach financial close in 2026 and connect to the national grid in the third quarter of 2027. At full capacity, the wind farm is projected to generate around 352,380 megawatt-hours annually, supplying power to more than 13,500 Omani households. It will also free up approximately 67 million cubic metres of natural gas per year, according to Nama Power and Water Procurement.
The investment is estimated at around OMR50mn ($130mn). Jaalan Bani Bu Ali was selected for its favourable wind conditions. The project aims to strengthen the Sultanate’s energy security while reducing reliance on hydrocarbons for electricity production.
Local capacity deployment and economic effects
Nama Power and Water Procurement stated that the project would include a local development component through the In-Country Value (ICV) programme, allocating contracts to Omani companies and creating opportunities for small and medium enterprises. This strategy aims to maximise economic benefits for the Ash Sharqiyah South region.
EDF power solutions, already involved in another renewable project in Oman, seeks to expand its footprint in the country through this new partnership. The company highlighted its technical expertise to ensure the success of the plant’s construction and operation.
Tripartite partnership for long-term development
Al Khadra Partners, part of the Hind Bahwan Group, will contribute regional experience and local execution capabilities. OQ Alternative Energy, a subsidiary of the state-owned OQ Group, will coordinate local project activities. As Oman’s designated national champion for clean energy, OQAE plays a key role in the country’s strategy to reach 30% renewable electricity generation by 2030.
The Jaalan Bani Bu Ali project stands among the largest onshore wind initiatives launched in Oman to date. It marks a significant step in the country’s energy mix diversification and is expected to avoid more than 270,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually.
