Duke Energy Invests $100M in a 50 MW Battery in North Carolina
Duke Energy commissions a 50 MW storage system at its former Allen coal plant site. A second 167 MW battery, the company’s largest, will follow at this same Gaston County location.

Duke Energy has connected a lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) and four-hour duration to the grid. This installation, representing an investment of approximately $100M, occupies the site of the former Allen coal plant, located on Lake Wylie and closed in December 2024. According to the company, the project was delivered under budget and ahead of schedule, with commissioning effective in November.
