Chile has taken another step in its energy transition with the commissioning of a hybrid solar power plant located in the northern part of the Metropolitan Region. The Don Humberto project, developed by the local subsidiary of Enel Green Power, combines an installed solar capacity of 81 MW with an energy storage system (BESS) capable of delivering 67 MW over two hours.
A model for an efficient energy transition
This hybrid plant generates 188 GWh of electricity annually, equivalent to the energy consumption of nearly 80,000 households. The energy storage system manages approximately 43 GWh, providing valuable flexibility to meet demand during peak hours or when solar resources are scarce.
According to industry sources, this facility meets the reliability and safety standards set by the National Electric Coordinator, ensuring a stable supply for the National Electric System (SEN).
Significant economic and environmental impact
By reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 148,000 tons per year, this initiative aligns with Chile’s climate goals. The project also highlights a growing trend toward diversifying energy solutions to maximize efficiency while minimizing costs for end-users.
Regulatory challenges and business opportunities
The development of hybrid projects like Don Humberto underscores the importance of regulatory frameworks to fully integrate storage systems into the energy market. Beyond their environmental impact, these solutions stabilize energy costs and attract long-term investments.
Experts suggest this model could be replicated in other regions of the country, enhancing the competitiveness of Chile’s energy sector and attracting international partnerships.
