Samsung C&T Corporation (Construction and Trading), a major player in engineering and construction, has signed a contract with Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser AS, a subsidiary of Norwegian company Nel ASA. This agreement, valued at approximately €5 million, involves the delivery of 10 MW of alkaline electrolyzers for the development of a pilot pink hydrogen project in South Korea.

This pilot project aims to utilize surplus energy from nuclear plants to produce hydrogen, thereby optimizing the use of available energy capacities. The goal is to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of this model for future applications.

A strategic project for Samsung C&T

This contract marks the second collaboration between Samsung C&T and Nel ASA. Earlier this year, the two companies worked together on a green hydrogen project powered by solar energy. With this new partnership, Samsung C&T strengthens its strategy in the hydrogen sector, a key area of its energy portfolio.

The equipment required for this project will be manufactured at the Herøya plant in Norway, where Nel ASA operates the world’s first fully automated electrolyzer production line.

Progress for hydrogen energy in South Korea

The pilot project, a first of its kind in South Korea, aims to position the country on the global hydrogen map while aligning with Samsung C&T’s energy ambitions. “We need the best electrolysis technology for this innovative project, and Nel perfectly meets our expectations,” said Byung Soo Lee, head of Samsung C&T’s Energy Solutions Business Unit.

Prospects for pink hydrogen
