La Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), compagnie pétrolière nationale du Koweït, a annoncé la découverte d’un gisement important de gaz naturel dans la région offshore du pays. Le champ, nommé Jazah, couvre une superficie estimée à 40 kilomètres carrés et renferme environ un trillion de pieds cubes de gaz, soit près de 28,3 milliards de mètres cubes.

Production quotidienne et ambitions énergétiques

La production issue du champ Jazah devrait dépasser 29 millions de pieds cubes de gaz par jour, ce qui équivaut à plus de 820.000 mètres cubes. Cette découverte constitue une étape clé dans les efforts engagés par les autorités publiques pour renforcer les capacités énergétiques du pays, à travers des investissements ciblés dans l’exploration et le développement des ressources offshore.

Le ministre du Pétrole et président de la KPC, Tariq Suleiman Al-Roumi, a qualifié cette découverte d’”étape stratégique”, affirmant qu’elle répond aux objectifs nationaux de sécurité énergétique. Il a également précisé que cette initiative publique vise à accroître la production nationale de gaz tout en soutenant la croissance économique du pays.

Accélération du développement des infrastructures

Les travaux de mise en production devraient s’intensifier dans les mois à venir, avec pour objectif d’intégrer rapidement le champ de Jazah au système de production existant. Des investissements publics sont mobilisés pour soutenir le développement de nouvelles infrastructures de traitement et de transport du gaz extrait en mer.

Les autorités estiment que l’exploitation de cette ressource pourrait renforcer les capacités de consommation domestique et ouvrir la voie à une augmentation des exportations, sans que de calendrier précis n’ait encore été communiqué. KPC indique également que ces projets publics s’accompagnent d’opportunités de formation et d’emploi pour les compétences locales.

Soutien étatique à la filière gazière

Le Koweït, dont l’économie repose largement sur les revenus des hydrocarbures, cherche à diversifier son bouquet énergétique. L’État mise sur le développement du gaz naturel comme levier d’équilibre entre exportations, consommation intérieure et transition vers des ressources moins polluantes.

La découverte du champ Jazah s’inscrit dans un cadre plus large d’investissements publics visant à moderniser le secteur énergétique. Ce développement confirme également la volonté du gouvernement de tirer parti des ressources marines jusqu’ici peu exploitées pour renforcer l’autonomie énergétique du pays.
