Hygreen Energy, a global electrolyzer manufacturer and hydrogen technology developer, recently delivered a 25-megawatt (MW) electrolyzer system to Huadian Weifang Power Generation Co., Ltd. This project, located in Weifang, Shandong Province, China, is the largest hydrogen production initiative in the region to date. This delivery represents a significant advancement in the integration of electrolyzers into large-scale projects, solidifying their role in the energy transition.
Designed to produce up to 3.6 tons of hydrogen per day with a purity of 99.999%, the delivered system includes five electrolyzer stacks, each with a 5 MW capacity. Hygreen Energy also designed and manufactured the plant’s balance-of-system equipment, ensuring optimal integration with existing infrastructure.
An Integrated Solution for the Local Energy Grid
This project is integrated into the Huadian Weifang power plant, reducing renewable energy waste while strengthening the resilience of the local power grid. The hydrogen produced will supply an on-site refueling station and will also be blended with natural gas for industrial and residential use in the region. Installation and commissioning began in November 2024, with completion expected in Q1 2025.
Supporting China’s National Ambitions
The project is the first large-scale demonstration of hydrogen energy storage under the national initiative “Hydrogen Into Ten Thousand Homes.” This strategy, launched by the Chinese government, aims to promote hydrogen adoption as a sustainable solution for various sectors, including urban infrastructure and heavy industries. Huadian Weifang Power Generation is part of China Huadian Corporation, one of the country’s largest power generation groups.
Benny Wang, CEO of Hygreen Energy, stated: “With its 25-megawatt scale, our delivery is an important validation of the role of electrolyzers in large-scale hydrogen projects and highlights the reliability of our technology for other initiatives worldwide.”
Prospects for the Hydrogen Sector
Beyond this project, Hygreen Energy continues to expand its presence in the hydrogen sector, including a recent contract for a 40 MW electrolyzer system in another major project in China. These developments emphasize the growing importance of hydrogen as a key solution in the global energy transition, particularly for emerging economies seeking to reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining industrial growth.
