GeoRueil, the geothermal power plant in Rueil-Malmaison, France, is now officially in operation and will heat 5,000 homes.

A geothermal power plant

GeoRueil will use 68% renewable energy to heat the homes. The geothermal power plant is located in a residential area of the town. In addition, there were no delays in the work.

A mediation device allowed local residents to accept the project. In less than a year, Rueil Energie’s teams deployed 10.4 kilometers of network. On the occasion of the launch of GeoRueil, many personalities were on site.

The users of the Rueil Energie network benefit from an energy coming from 68% of renewable resources thanks to this geothermal installation. GeoRueil will allow a stabilization of the heating costs for the users. The geothermal power plant of Rueil-Malmaison draws water at 60 degrees from a depth of 1500 meters.

Local support

With a flow rate exceeding the forecasts, amounting to 350m³ per hour, the geothermal energy can reach a power of 14.2MW. The GeoRueil project plans to supply 12,000 homes by 2024. In addition, the installation will also avoid the emission of 21,000 tons of CO2.

This project is the result of a collaboration between Engie’s subsidiary, Rueil Energie, and the Banque des Territoires and the commune. This is part of the city’s decarbonization project. GeoRueil represents a budget of €71 million.

It received €18.99 million in funding from ADEME and €5.5 million from the Ile-de-France region. This “low energy” geothermal resource represents 26 kilometers of heating network. Finally, Rueil Energie, benefits from a public service delegation wholly owned by ENGIE Solutions.
