After a long absence from the Romanian market, ENERCON has signed a contract with Smart Power Generation Alfa S.R.L. to construct a 38 MW wind farm in Cudalbi, in the Galaţi region. This project, involving the installation of seven E-160 EP5 turbines on modular steel towers 120 meters high, is part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) funded by the European Union.

A Strategic Return

ENERCON had left the Romanian market due to a slowdown in renewable energy development. Today, the situation is evolving thanks to financial incentives under the PNRR, which facilitate the realization of energy infrastructure projects.

With this project, ENERCON aims to strengthen its presence in Eastern Europe by targeting commercial opportunities enabled by stabilized regulatory and financial frameworks. The company will deploy its E-160 EP5 technology, which offers capabilities suited to the local market’s characteristics and the scale of the envisioned projects.

A Market Revitalized by European Funds

Romania experienced a slowdown in renewable energy development in recent years, but European funding is now changing the landscape. The Cudalbi wind farm fits into this dynamic, benefiting from institutional support to secure investments and reduce risks.

The PNRR provides direct funding for projects that meet specific objectives, including increasing energy production from renewable sources. This framework ensures the economic viability of projects while attracting players like ENERCON, who had left the market due to a previously perceived uncertain environment.

Commercial and Operational Challenges

ENERCON provides comprehensive solutions ranging from turbine supply to turnkey engineering services. This approach meets the expectations of local and international investors in terms of costs, efficiency, and timelines.

The 38 MW capacity is modest compared to other European projects but represents an important step in ENERCON’s strategy to return to an emerging market. The contract signed with Smart Power Generation Alfa S.R.L. could serve as a springboard for future collaborations, especially in a context where the EU’s climate goals push for diversification of energy sources.

Development Prospects

With this project, ENERCON is laying the groundwork for expanded operations in Romania. The company states that it is working on several similar projects in the country, which could strengthen its position against competitors. However, the success of these initiatives will depend on the ability to stabilize financial and institutional partnerships as well as manage technical and logistical constraints.

The Cudalbi wind farm is expected to be the first step in this strategy, and its operational outcomes will be closely watched by market players.
