Qatar Energy has selected Shell as its partner for the North field East (NFE) expansion project. Shell will hold a 25% share in a joint venture that will own 25% of the North Field East expansion project. This includes four LNG mega trains with a combined nominal LNG capacity of 32 million tons per year.
Earlier in the year, Qatar Energy had launched a tender for partnerships. In addition to Shell, ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, Conocophilips as well as Chevron and Eni have responded.

With its investment in this project, Shell will support the supply of natural gas internationally. To reduce emissions, the company will apply carbon capture and sequestration. A very important factor according to Ben Van Beurden, CEO of Shell.
He states:
« Low-carbon natural gas is a key pillar of our Powering Progress strategy and will also help us achieve our goal of becoming a net zero emissions company by 2050. »
This is the largest project in the history of LNG. The North Field East expansion will increase Qatar’s LNG production by 64% by 2027. This will strengthen Qatar’s position as the world’s largest LNG exporter.
This is not the first partnership between the two companies. They had already joined forces for the Pearl GTL project.
